Fact or Myth - You're better at acclimatising if you've been through it all before

So, you've been through the motions of acclimatising to a new altitude on a previous trip, does this mean you'll be as good or better the next time? This is indeed more often than not the case. The body, having previously experienced the rigor of acclimatising does become more efficient at the process and you should notice this on subsequent trips. So, this is indeed a Fact

That said, like with many things, there are variables and no two occasions can be compared directly to one another. For example, iron levels can have an impact, as will the rate of ascent or even illness.

Whether you've been to altitude before or not, it's super important you do all the basics well throughout your entire ascent and don't take it as a given that you'll be OK.

These include:

  • Staying hydrated

  • Sleeping well

  • Eating well

  • Walking slowly and trying to keep to the daily ascent to 300-500m above the previous night's sleep height

  • 'Climb High, Sleep Low' if the terrain allows.
